DearJames,
Will my husband, who is struggling hard with addiction, get help before it kills him?

Dear Before It Kills Him,
We all believe ourselves to be invincible, until we are not.
Addiction is one of the most serious illnesses humanity faces, and yet we demand little of ourselves as a society to treating and eradicating the underlying causes. Left in its generational wake are entire families and communities, as far too many suffer its effects.
You know these truths all too well, as you continue to bear witness to the destruction your husbands addiction takes on him, you, society, and other surrounding family members and friends. While being genetically predisposed accounts for whether an individual will become an addict, so too does the intense high of escapism.
Hopelessness, lack of opportunity, education, sustenance, and support to name a few, all play a role in influencing ones turn towards or away from that which becomes addictive. Unless or until society accepts responsibility for itself, addiction will continue to wage war upon the greater whole of humanity.
There are no excuses, only opportunities to self-correct, both individually and collectively. In your husband’s case, he has yet to hit rock bottom, and this gives him the unfortunate illusion that he is superhuman.
Yet even kryptonite rendered Superman susceptible, vulnerable, and thus he was super-vigilant in his awareness of its presence. Superhuman or not, your husband has a long road ahead of him, and whether he survives the ordeal has yet to be written.
It all depends upon which path/experience serves his soul’s greatest advancement and evolution. Oddly enough, redemption can just as easily arise out of addiction, as it can sobriety. The heart of the matter lies within.

Before It Kills Him
Dear Before It Kills Him,
While it may be of little comfort to you in this time of pain and loss, please know his life, and all it encompassed, has great meaning and purpose. The lessons he came to share, and experience will reverberate for years and lifetimes to come.
As time gives way to distance, you will have an ever-greater opportunity to see these gifts and the true legacy he leaves behind more clearly.
My deepest condolences for your loss, and greatest hopes for your recovery and renewal.
Many Blessings,
DearJames
