“Reverence is a deep, humbling attitude of profound respect, love, and awe toward something perceived as sacred, divine, or infinitely greater than the self.

It is an emotional and mental posture triggered by the recognition of majesty, mystery, or supreme authority. A conscious shrinking of personal ego and self-importance in the presence of the divine or the sublime.

It invokes radical respect, treating people, living things, nature, and the cosmos not as utilities for personal pleasure, but as co-creations or sacred manifestations.

In religious traditions like Christianity, reverence is closely tied to the “fear of the Lord, “not as a paralyzing terror, but as a holy affection, deep devotion, and submission to God’s holiness and commandments.

In everyday life and nature, reverence is an everyday spiritual practice. It manifests as protecting the environment, honoring the human body as a temple, and practicing civility to counter cynicism and exploitation.

True reverence rejects a casual, overly familiar attitude toward the sacred, as well as pride, commercialization, and the urge to manipulate reality for self-gratification.”
