“Playing small” is a psychological survival strategy. It happens when your actions are driven by fear rather than purpose. It often involves hiding your talents by downplaying achievements or keeping ideas to yourself to avoid standing out or making others uncomfortable.

It includes settling or accepting less-than-ideal jobs, relationships, or lifestyles because of a fear of rejection or failure. It can also include people-pleasing; submitting to the expectations of others at the expense of your own authentic desires.

“GREATNESS” requires taking up space as greatness and “playing small” are mutually exclusive.

Great innovations, deep connections, and personal breakthroughs inherently require navigating uncertainty and the necessity of risk. You cannot innovate without the risk of failing.

To create something extraordinary, you must leverage your authenticity, your unique voice and gifts. To hide those parts of yourself stifles your capacity for greatness.

Staying comfortable limits your growth. Embracing discomfort allows you to build resilience, learn new skills, and achieve a higher level of mastery.

The concept is famously explored in Marianne Williamson’s widely cited passage from A Return to Love, which notes: “Your playing small doesn’t serve the world. There’s nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you.””
