Catharsis

MEANING
“The process of releasing pent-up, repressed, or strong emotions like anger, grief, or fear resulting in emotional relief, renewal, or psychological restoration.

Originally from the ancient Greek word katharsis, meaning “cleansing” or “purging” and used in philosophy by Aristotle to describe how tragedy and drama arouse negative emotions in an audience, which are then safely expelled, leaving viewers feeling happier and renewed.

It was later adapted into psychoanalysis by Sigmund Freud to describe the release of tension that happens when repressed memories or anxieties are brought into consciousness.”

SPIRITUALLY
“In a spiritual context, catharsis is the process of purging deep-seated emotional, mental, and spiritual toxins. It goes beyond simple psychological release, acting as a sacred cleansing of the soul that breaks down ego-barriers to facilitate profound renewal, inner peace, and spiritual awakening.

Tracing back to ancient Greek philosophy and mystery traditions, catharsis is the act of emptying the vessel of the soul, removing accumulated grief, fear, or attachment so that higher spiritual truths can enter.

It involves stripping away the false self (the ego) by confronting suppressed emotions and shadow work. By facing these dark or painful aspects rather than running from them, the individual integrates them and achieves a higher state of consciousness.”
