DearJames,
I am an addict and in the big book it states there are such unfortunates: those who can’t make it. Am I one of those unfortunates? Will I conquer addiction? Will I stay in the travel industry career?

Dear Will I Conquer Addiction,
Addiction of any form is a serious matter. At times, an individual can conquer or control his/her addiction(s) on their own. However, that is usually reserved for those individuals with a very keen / hardy sense of self, and great will power.
In most instances, addiction requires treatment, and I’m not talking about Celebrity Rehab treatment where one enters one side of the building and exits the other side just as quickly.
Treatment requires immense dedication, commitment, and awareness to address the underlying causal factors that are playing a supporting or foundational role in the creation and reliance upon the addiction.
While the good book may state there are “unfortunates” who will not make it, the ancient proverb, the road to hell is paved with good intentions, is more aptly to be applied here: meaning, if you lack the desire or will or commitment to address the underlying issues, your actions are not in alignment with your purported or intended intentions to overcome your addiction(s), and thus you impact your ability to “make it.”
If though on the other hand, with great resolve and determination, you act to align your actions with your intentions, seek reputable treatment, and surrender yourself wholeheartedly to the process and your recovery, you most certainly WILL make it.
The battle is in letting go, surrendering unto a power much higher and powerful than yourself or any addiction of your choosing for that matter. The addiction itself is simply the manifestation of the festering wound(s) that lie unaddressed within.
Overcoming addiction can be a life-long pursuit. However, again, when one’s intentions are pure and aligned, it matters not the number of attempts, days or years required of you to reach your goal, for surely God sees your earnest intention and raw surrender and welcomes you just the same.
Commit to aligning your intentions every moment of every day and then heed the wisdom of your soul and spirit, for it knows all and your “ego-mind-personality” self knows little.
As your current occupation feeds your habit(s), it would be both wise of and timely for you to seek to open new doors of opportunity unrelated to the past.
A new day dawns every morning; avail yourself of its power, presence, and opportunity.
