SO THE SEEDS OF VICTORY

Sow The Seeds Of Victory

Borrowing from an iconic food-related poster of the First World War created by famous illustrator and artist James Montgomery Flagg, “SOW THE SEEDS OF VICTORY” and its sister poster “WILL YOU HAVE A PART IN VICTORY?” invoke the call for PERSONAL ACTION, ACCOUNTABILITY & RESPONSIBILITY.

Each poster features the United States embodied as COLUMBIA, a FIERCELY INDEPENDENT WOMAN, striding boldly through a freshly plowed field casting seeds from a round basket. Draped in a red, white, and blue dress representing the American flag, along with a Phyrgian cap on her head, a symbol of FREEDOM and LIBERTY, COLUMBIA epitomizes American ideals of LIBERTY, JUSTICE, & EQUALITY FOR ALL.

The bottom of each poster reads “EVERY GARDEN A MUNITION PLANT.” The posters imply that by PLANTING GARDENS, ordinary Americans could “SOW THE SEEDS OF VICTORY” by TAKING PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY to PLANT AND RAISE THEIR OWN GARDEN, thus assisting the war effort both literally and symbolically.

The “EVERY GARDEN A MUNITION PLANT” reinforced the importance of growing gardens at home, rather than needlessly consuming commercially canned produce and wartime materials and fuel.
